a greater POWER

What represents the greatest power today – a president, a multinational, a nuclear bomb, gravity, the sea, the wind?  Greater than all of these was that felt by the eighth man to walk on the moon:

‘The Earth reminded us of a Christmas tree ornament hanging in the blackness of space. As we got farther and farther away it diminished in size. Finally it shrank to the size of a marble, the most beautiful marble you can imagine. That beautiful, warm, living object looked so fragile, so delicate, that if you touched it with a finger it would crumble and fall apart. Seeing this has to change a man, has to make a man appreciate the creation of God and the love of God. I felt the power of God as I'd never felt it before’ – James Irwin

The wind can drive mighty turbines to harness power but the greater power is the one behind it all.  Whose power do you feel subject to – ‘other’ distant, wild and sometimes malevolent powers or the power of God?  Everyone is subject to greater powers, like it or not. 

‘The historian and moralist, who was otherwise known simply as Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887: ’Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men’. This is one of the best known proverbs.  Here’s wisdom about power from a few others:

  • ‘Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around’ – Leo Buscaglia
  • ‘When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace’ – Jimi Hendrix
  • ‘If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive’ – Eleonora Duse
  • ‘I don't think there's anyone who would say they don't want or need more of God's power in their life’ – Joyce Meyer

In all his troubles, Job wanted to understand and share the power of God:

  • ‘God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?’ – Job 36:22
  •  ‘I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal’ – Job 27:11
  •  ‘His wisdom is profound, his power is vast’ – Job 9:4

Elijah had a showdown with the powers of the day and went head to head with the prophets of Baal versus Almighty God.  You know the story when God made fire fall from heaven to consume Elijah’s  sacrifice but none came from Baal – see 1 Kings 18:16-39.  The prophets of Baal then cried out, ‘The Lord – he is God!’  What does it take for us to acknowledge the power of God?  If there was ever a time to know who really is ‘in power’, it’s now!  Here’s the encouragement needed for everything you may be facing or will face in the future:

  • ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging … He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth”’ – Psalm 46
  • ‘Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power’ – Ephesians 6:10
  • ‘His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness’ – 2 Peter 1:3

Like it or not, there’s a time coming when every knee will bow the knee and confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  He is the one who gives power now to those who believe with the warning that now is the time when he can save, for tomorrow may be too late:

  • ‘The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”’ – Matthew 8:27
  •  ‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time’ – 1 Peter 1:3-5
  • ‘For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority’ – Colossians 2:9-10

Do not be in doubt about the power of God – he is at work in bringing the earth’s history to its dramatic grand completion under the secure headship of Christ.  Yes, a greater power is with the people of God, his precious family even when it seems like we are outnumbered and overwhelmed.  When King Hezekiah was faced with a mighty army against him from the King of Assyria, here was the encouragement God’s people, needed both then and now: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him’ – 2 Chronicles 32:7

The first one of those eight men who walked the moon to die was James Irwin aged 61 – he is now in God’s presence.  Let his story inspire you to recognise, receive and share the power of God’s Good News in Christ:

 ‘Being on the moon had a profound spiritual impact upon my life. Before I entered space with the Apollo 15 mission in July of 1971, I was a lukewarm Christian, to say the least! I was even a silent Christian, but I feel the Lord sent me to the moon so I could return to the earth and share his Son, Jesus Christ. The entire space achievement is put in proper perspective when one realizes that God walking on the earth is more important than man walking on the moon. I believe that God walked on the earth 2,000 years ago in the person of Jesus Christ. I have totally yielded my life to the Lord’s service to tell people everywhere about the life-changing message of Christ’ – James Irwin

Can we do this?  We don’t have to go to the moon and back to do so!  It’s the greater power of God that can help us:

‘Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen’ – Ephesians 3:20
